2019 Recap!

I thought it was high time we updated the blogspot with some of our most recent art projects!
Here's a rundown of just SOME of the projects we've worked on so far this year...

In January we completed the artwork for our first graphic novel, "Demarcus Williams & the Job from Hell". It's a labor of love based off of Ethan's experiences working as a temp in the IT industry.

In February we printed a limited print run of 25 issues of the "Job from Hell" graphic novel.
Bird and I also began a series of horror themed collaborative paintings. We chose to illustrate futuristic "2099" versions of some iconic horror characters from the 80's and 90's including Jason, Freddy, Ghostface, Leatherface, Michael Myers, and Mars Attacks.

We also make STICKERS!!!!!!

In March we were invited as guests at Francis Marion University's "Cool Con" event and talked with a number of students. We gave some portfolio reviews and artistic advice to the next generation.

We also knocked out a few 18x24 posters that weren't horror themed...

In April Pretty Weird collaborated with another writer / artist team in the publication and promotion of a flip comic which paired an 8 page teaser of our "Job from Hell" graphic novel with the short story of "Paper Champion".

We debuted our collaborative flip book at the Columbia Toy Show and at our local comic book store, Scratch 'N Spin.

Ethan set out on the road and participated in the Twin City Comic Con and Florence Power Cons.

We submitted a digital version of our graphic novel to Comixology for review and eventual publication on their digital comics platform.

In May we were guests at the Free Comic Book Day festivities at Scratch 'N Spin.

Over Memorial Day Weekend we attended our very first Horror Con as vendors! The Carolina Fear Fest was AMAZING!

In June we completed a promo poster for our buddies over at the Screaming Soup website.

There are more things to come....

Comic Book Release Event

Come and support local artists from 12pm to 2pm as they do sketches and sign copies of their new flipbook comic Paper Champion/Demarcus Williams & The Job From Hell!

Jeff Morris and Jorge Santiago, of Spencer & Locke, have created Paper Champion, a story about cardboard wrestling belts, haunted dreams, and healing from loss. Based on Jeff's experience as an indie-wrestler and the death of his father, the comic examines the relationship between grief and goals, reflecting on the bittersweet moments that come when a lost loved one cannot watch you achieve your dreams.

Representing the team from Pretty Weird Art is Rachel "Bird" Mongin. Read the story of an unfortunate soul who accidentally accepts a job in the IT department from Hell!

Demarcus Williams and the Job From Hell: test prints!

I printed out my entire "Demarcus Williams and the Job From Hell" graphic novel this evening. This comic is looking awesome! Its definitely my best comic to date! I plan to wisk it off to the beach this weekend where I'm going to take it for long romatic walks during the day and edit the crap out of it at night. The goal is to have the print file ready to go for January.

Pretty Weird Art Avatar Pitch

Pretty Weird Art's Portfolio of Music Related Artwork.
A Note from Bird-
I have loved the  music scene since I was 14 years old.  Punk Rock first and then Metal as I outgrew my preteen angst. My dad was military and we were stationed at a base 30 minutes outside of Nashville, TN. I found myself living next door to two wonderful underground scenes and I took full advantage of the opportunity. Flash forward to five years later. Favor House Atlantic just came on the radio and I'm sitting on the floor in a friends living room reading the first issue of the Amory Wars.  The wheels in my head turned with the pages of that comic book, and at 19 years old I knew that I wanted to illustrate music.  I believe every song whether part of a concept album or not, tells a story in and of itself. I want to go beyond videos and albums and illustrate full graphic novels based on music and lyrics.
After talking with Johannes from Avatar over a month ago, I have put these many years of moshing, learning, listening and developing my craft to work. Johannes' lyrics to The King's Harvest are beautiful and deserving of visuals that illustrate them well.  If Long Live the King is Avatar's love letter to metal, then this project proposal is my way of writing back.

Pretty Weird Art Posters: Nekrogoblikon Album Posters

Last month I decided to build a portfolio of music related artwork. I've always loved making posters and I've been listening to a lot of Nekrogoblikon so I decided to make some posters for them. I've spent my last couple of weekends drawing a poster for each of their album releases. Here's the final artwork. I loved their "Goblins from outer space want to destroy the human race" narrative so I designed each poster to illustrate various goblin war machines and soldiers .
